Combustion Air

Combustion air fan for an industrial boiler

Combustion Air Fans for Burners and Boilers

A combustion air fan supplies the exact amount of air your burner needs.

Combustion air conditions the efficiency of your burners and flame stability. MECAVENT SA designs and supplies custom combustion air fans and blowers for steam boilers, industrial boilers, ovens, and hot air generators: very silent, compact, with integrated damper for air flow regulation.

Controlled combustion air, a more efficient burner

Poorly regulated airflow degrades combustion efficiency: too little air produces unburnt fuel, too much air cools the flame and increases flue gas losses. Each MECAVENT combustion air fan is sized according to the burner’s power, the circuit’s pressure drop, and the suction conditions.

Our solutions for combustion air

  • High-pressure centrifugal fans for gas, oil, or biomass burners;
  • Flow regulation by integrated damper or variable frequency drive, to match burner load;
  • Acoustic treatment: enclosures and suction silencers to reduce noise in the boiler room;
  • Flexible connectors to decouple vibrations between the fan and ducts;
  • Versions for preheated air on request.

Applications

Steam and superheated water boilers, industrial burners, process ovens, dryers, hot air generators, incinerators, and thermal oxidizers.

Variable frequency drive: immediate energy savings

The power absorbed by a fan varies with the cube of its speed: reducing the speed by 20% approximately halves electricity consumption. Controlling combustion air with a variable frequency drive rather than a damper can therefore significantly reduce the electricity bill when the burner operates at partial load, while also reducing noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information is needed to size a combustion air fan?

The burner’s power and type, the required flow rate and pressure, the temperature of the aspirated air, the site’s altitude, and the target noise level. The data from an existing fan’s nameplate is often sufficient to start.

Can you replace an existing fan?

Yes. We design replacement fans based on the performance and footprint of the existing unit, regardless of its original brand.

Damper or variable frequency drive?

The damper is simple and economical to purchase. The variable frequency drive costs more, but it is quickly amortized in installations that operate at partial load for extended periods. We help you choose according to your operating profile.

Why entrust your combustion air to MECAVENT?

With over 25 years of experience in aerolics and industrial acoustics, MECAVENT SA designs its custom fans and performs their tests in its workshops. We also supply regulation systems (variable frequency drives, automation, sensors), flexible connectors, and acoustic treatment, and our technicians ensure on-site assembly and commissioning. A single point of contact for the entire combustion air chain.

Combustion air fan: precise air for efficient combustion

The combustion air fan has a direct influence on burner efficiency, emissions and safety. Too little air produces unburnt fuel and carbon monoxide; too much air cools the flame and wastes energy. MECAVENT sizes each combustion air fan for the burner’s air demand across its whole operating range, taking into account the pressure required at the burner and the losses in the air ducts.

For boilers, furnaces, kilns and thermal oxidisers, we supply combustion air fans with stable pressure curves, robust construction and low vibration. Where the air is preheated or the fan is installed in a hot environment, we use heat-resistant bearings, cooling discs and suitable materials.

Control with variable frequency drives

Coupling the combustion air fan with a variable frequency drive allows the airflow to follow the burner modulation precisely. This improves combustion quality, reduces electricity consumption and lowers noise at partial load. We supply and commission the complete package: fan, drive, silencer and flexible connectors.

Emissions and regulations

Precise air control helps operators keep emissions within the limits set for their installations, for example under Directive (EU) 2015/2193 on medium combustion plants. We also replace existing combustion air fans, including those from other manufacturers.
